The traditional Spanish term for a boy celebrating his 15th birthday is quinceañero.
Quinceañera is the feminine form, while quinceañero is the masculine form. Both words are built around quince, meaning “fifteen,” and refer to a person associated with the fifteenth-birthday milestone.
The celebration has historically focused more often on girls, which is why quinceañera is much more familiar internationally. In many communities, however, boys may also mark the occasion with a quinceañero celebration or a similar family event.
Modern celebrations are not limited to one gender or one prescribed format. Families may adapt the ceremony, clothing, music, attendants, and religious elements to reflect their own beliefs and preferences.
