The traditional Spanish-language term for a quinceañera’s male escort is chambelán.
A chambelán is commonly part of the quinceañera’s court and may dance with the celebrant during a choreographed presentation or formal waltz. The word is often translated as “escort,” although actual roles differ among families and countries. Some celebrations include one principal chambelán, while others have several male members in the court.
The term should not be confused with padrino. A padrino is a sponsor or honored adult who may help provide items or financial support for the celebration. A dama is traditionally a female member of the court, and a mariachi is a musician or musical ensemble associated with Mexican music.
Modern quinceañeras frequently adapt or omit the court. Some celebrants choose a small group of friends, a mixed-gender group, or no formal court at all. The terminology therefore describes a traditional role rather than a compulsory part of every celebration.
