The traditional quinceañera court’s formal group dance is commonly called el vals in Spanish.
El vals means “the waltz.” In a formal presentation, the quinceañera and members of her court may perform a rehearsed waltz before the party’s open dancing begins. The routine can include an entrance, arranged formations, and a partner dance with the court.
The term is more specific than fiesta, which means party, and more specific than baile, which means dance or dancing. Modern quinceañeras often add a surprise dance using pop, hip-hop, salsa, or other styles. Those additions do not change the traditional meaning of el vals: it identifies the formal waltz segment of the celebration.
