In much of Cuba, a quinceañera celebration is commonly called quinces. The shortened plural form is associated with Cuban usage and reflects the event’s connection with a girl’s fifteenth birthday.
Spanish-speaking communities use several names for the same broad tradition. Fiesta de quince años, quinceañera, quince, and quinces can all appear depending on country, region, family, and diaspora community. These names do not guarantee that the ceremony will follow one fixed format.
Cuban quinces may include formal clothing, family photographs, a reception, music, dancing, and ceremonial moments. The details have changed over time and are influenced by migration, local culture, religion, and economic circumstances.
Quinces should not be confused with Cuban quince, which can also be used informally to describe the celebration rather than a separate festival. Similarly, bodas means weddings and posadas refers to a different Christmas-season tradition.
