White is the traditional New Year’s Eve clothing color worn by many celebrants in Rio de Janeiro.
Rio’s Réveillon celebration is especially associated with people dressed in white on Copacabana Beach. The color is commonly linked with peace, renewal, and spiritual protection, and the custom reflects the influence of Afro-Brazilian religious traditions alongside broader Brazilian New Year symbolism.
The beach celebration also features concerts, fireworks, and offerings placed on the water in some traditions. Clothing colors can carry different wishes in Brazil: other colors may represent love, prosperity, health, or good fortune. White is therefore the dominant traditional answer for Rio, but not a universal dress rule; visitors and residents may choose other colors or ordinary festive clothing.
