The traditional New Year's Eve broadcast in Germany featuring the sketch is Dinner for One.
Dinner for One is a short English-language comedy sketch written by the British author Lauri Wylie. It follows Miss Sophie as she celebrates her 90th birthday with a formal dinner, while her butler James serves the absent guests and gradually imitates their drinking habits. The recurring line “The same procedure as every year” is central to the sketch.
German television recorded and broadcast the performance in 1963, with Freddie Frinton as James and May Warden as Miss Sophie. Although the performers and language are British, the sketch became far more strongly associated with German New Year's Eve broadcasting than with Britain, where it was not originally a comparable annual tradition.
The title can cause confusion because the story is a birthday dinner rather than a New Year's celebration. Its New Year's connection comes from the broadcast tradition: German viewers commonly watch it on December 31, often alongside other end-of-year programs.
