What is the traditional name of the cave where the First Buddhist Council met?

The story behind the answer

The traditional name of the cave where the First Buddhist Council met is Sattapanni Cave.

Buddhist tradition places the First Council at Rajgir, ancient Rajagaha, soon after the Buddha’s death. The assembly is said to have met in or near Sattapanni Cave under the leadership of Mahakassapa. Its purpose was to recite and organize the Buddha’s teachings and monastic discipline.

Ananda is traditionally associated with reciting the discourses, while Upali is associated with reciting the monastic rules. The council is therefore important in Buddhist accounts of how the oral teachings were preserved.

The event belongs to traditional Buddhist history, and scholars debate its exact date and historical development. Sattapanni Cave should not be confused with later cave complexes such as Ajanta, Karla, or Dambulla.
