What is the traditional name for the quinceañera’s female attendants?

The story behind the answer

Damas is the traditional name for the quinceañera’s female attendants.

The word damas means “ladies” in Spanish. In the traditional court, the damas accompany the quinceañera alongside the male attendants known as chambelanes. They may wear coordinated dresses and take part in the formal entrance or choreographed dance.

The court is modeled in part on formal ceremonial entourages, but it is not a fixed institution with one required size. Families may select relatives, friends, or classmates, and many modern celebrations adjust the court to fit the quinceañera’s preferences.

Damas should not be confused with madrinas. Madrinas are female sponsors or honored adult helpers, while damas are usually young attendants participating in the presentation.
