Chambelán is the traditional Spanish name for a male partner or attendant who accompanies a quinceañera.
A chambelán may belong to the court of honor and participate in the celebrant’s entrance, formal photographs, and choreographed waltz. The word is often translated as “chamberlain,” although its role in a quinceañera is ceremonial rather than governmental.
Regional vocabulary differs. Some communities use chambelán de honor for the principal male escort, while others call male court members simply chambelanes. Families may also choose a female partner, several partners, or no formal court.
Chambelán should not be confused with padrino, which commonly means a male sponsor or godfather-like supporter. A person can hold both roles, but the words describe different relationships to the celebration.
