What is the traditional name for New Year's Eve in the Netherlands?
Answer
Oudejaarsavond
Answer
Oudejaarsavond
The traditional Dutch name for New Year's Eve is Oudejaarsavond.
Oudejaarsavond literally means “old year's evening” and is the Dutch term for December 31, the final evening of the calendar year. The word distinguishes the closing of the old year from Nieuwjaarsdag, or New Year's Day, on January 1.
Dutch New Year's Eve customs include social gatherings, televised comedy and the eating of oliebollen, deep-fried dough balls often served with powdered sugar. Fireworks have also been a major part of celebrations, although Dutch rules and local restrictions can change over time.
The term should not be confused with Koningsdag, the national holiday celebrating the monarch's birthday, or Sinterklaasavond, associated with the December 5 Saint Nicholas celebration.
