Quinceañero is the traditional masculine Spanish term for a boy celebrating his fifteenth birthday.
The word is the masculine counterpart to quinceañera, the term most widely associated with the elaborate coming-of-age celebration for girls. A boy’s event may also be called a quinceañera in some communities, because the word can refer broadly to the celebration rather than only to the celebrant.
Terminology is not perfectly uniform across Spanish-speaking countries. Families may use quinceañero, quince años, or an English description such as a fifteenth-birthday celebration.
The masculine term should not be confused with chambelán, which traditionally identifies a male member of the celebrant’s court. A quinceañero is the person reaching the milestone, not an attendant.
