Chambelán is the traditional male escort term used in some Mexican quinceañera customs.
A chambelán may accompany the quinceañera during her entrance, formal presentation, photographs, and choreographed dance. If several male attendants participate, they are called chambelanes. The role can be filled by a friend, cousin, sibling, or another trusted person.
Terminology varies across the Spanish-speaking world. Some families use escortes, acompañantes, or other regional expressions instead of chambelán. Consequently, the exact title should not be treated as a universal rule for every quinceañera.
A chambelán is also different from a padrino. The padrino is a sponsor who helps provide or finance elements of the event, while the chambelán is an attendant or escort.
