The waltz is the traditional formal dance most associated with a quinceañera reception.
A choreographed waltz may be performed by the quinceañera with members of her court, family, or other invited dancers. The dance gives the event a ceremonial presentation and is often rehearsed before the celebration. In Spanish, the dance may be called a vals.
Modern celebrations are not limited to one style. After the formal presentation, families may include popular music, regional dances, choreographed routines, or a surprise dance. These additions reflect changing tastes and local customs rather than replacing the traditional waltz in every case.
The waltz should not be confused with a required religious component. It is part of the social and ceremonial reception, while a Mass or blessing, when included, belongs to the religious portion of the day.
