A waltz is the traditional formal dance at the center of many quinceañeras.
The waltz is usually performed by the celebrant with members of her court, relatives, or both. Its partnered movements and formal character make it suitable for a carefully choreographed presentation during the reception.
Modern quinceañeras often expand beyond the traditional waltz. A choreographed surprise dance, sometimes called a surprise dance or baile sorpresa, may use pop, hip-hop, or other contemporary music after the formal portion.
A waltz is customary, not mandatory. Regional traditions and family choices determine the music, participants, costumes, and order of events, so not every quinceañera includes exactly the same dance program.
