What is the traditional female court title at a quinceañera?

The story behind the answer

The traditional female court title at a quinceañera is dama.

Dama means “lady” in Spanish and traditionally identifies a female member of the quinceañera’s court. Damas may join the celebrant and male attendants in a formal entrance, coordinated clothing, staged photographs, or a choreographed dance.

The court is a ceremonial feature rather than a fixed universal rule. The number of participants and the balance of genders vary by country, generation, family preference, and the size of the celebration. Contemporary events may use friends of any gender or avoid a court altogether.

A dama is not the same as a madrina. Madrina means “godmother” or female sponsor and can refer to an adult who supports the family or contributes to the event. Titles may be adapted in English-speaking communities, but dama remains the classic Spanish term for a female court member.
