What is the traditional Ethiopian Hamar ceremony in which initiates cross cattle called?

The story behind the answer

Ukuli Bula is the traditional Ethiopian Hamar ceremony in which initiates cross cattle.

The ceremony is a major Hamar rite of passage in the Omo Valley. A male initiate runs over the backs of cattle, traditionally completing the crossing four times. Success publicly demonstrates readiness for adult responsibilities and helps establish his position within Hamar social life.

The ceremony includes much more than the physical crossing. Families gather, songs and dances are performed, and relationships between households are reinforced. Marriage arrangements and the initiate’s future responsibilities are part of the wider social setting, although details vary among Hamar communities.

English-language reports frequently use “bull jumping” as a descriptive label. That phrase is understandable but less specific than Ukuli Bula. The Hamar ceremony should also be distinguished from Maasai age-set rites such as Eunoto.
