What is the title of the first book in Robert Jordan's 'The Wheel of Time' series?

The story behind the answer

The first book in Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time series is The Eye of the World. It introduces readers to the isolated Two Rivers, where young Rand al'Thor, Mat Cauthon, Perrin Aybara, Egwene al'Vere, and Nynaeve al'Meara become entangled in a conflict involving the Aes Sedai and the Dark One.

Tor Books published the novel in the United States on January 15, 1990. Jordan originally imagined The Wheel of Time as a much shorter project, but the story eventually expanded into a fourteen-volume main sequence. The series was completed after Jordan's death by Brandon Sanderson, using Jordan's extensive notes.

Readers sometimes confuse the opening novel with The Great Hunt, which is the second book, or The Dragon Reborn, which is the third. New Spring is a prequel, not the first publication in the main sequence. The Eye of the World also appeared in younger-reader editions titled From the Two Rivers and To the Blight.
