Pokémon Yellow is the enhanced first-generation Pokémon game released in Japan in 1998.
Unlike Pokémon Red and Green, which were the original paired releases, Pokémon Yellow was designed to resemble the Pokémon anime more closely. Pikachu accompanies the player outside its Poké Ball, and the story gives greater prominence to characters and events associated with the television series.
The game also uses the Game Boy Color’s expanded color capabilities, although it remains compatible with the original Game Boy. Its Japanese release came on September 12, 1998, followed by releases in other regions during 1999 and 2000.
Pokémon Yellow is sometimes mistaken for a second-generation title because it was released after Pokémon Gold and Silver had begun development. It is still part of Generation I and is an enhanced version of the original Kanto games, not a new generation.
