The British comedy sketch traditionally broadcast on New Year's Eve in Germany is titled “Dinner for One.”
The sketch stars May Warden as Miss Sophie and Freddie Frinton as her butler, James. Miss Sophie hosts an annual dinner for four absent friends, while James repeatedly pretends to serve them and becomes increasingly drunk as he consumes their drinks.
Although it is a British production in English, the sketch became an unusually strong German New Year's tradition after German television broadcast it in 1963. The line “The same procedure as every year” became closely associated with the holiday in German popular culture.
The program is often called Germany's most repeated television production, but that description concerns its repeated broadcasts rather than a record for the world's most-watched show. Its unusual status comes from the contrast between modest original fame in Britain and enormous seasonal popularity in German-speaking countries.
