What is the title of the 2019 sequel to The Handmaid's Tale?

The story behind the answer

The title of the 2019 sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale is The Testaments. Margaret Atwood published the novel 34 years after the original book, extending the story of Gilead and revealing what happened in the years after Offred’s account.

The Testaments is set 15 years after the events of The Handmaid’s Tale. Instead of focusing on a single narrator, it uses three voices: Aunt Lydia, a powerful official within Gilead; Agnes Jemima, a young woman raised inside the regime; and Daisy, a young woman living in Canada. Their stories gradually connect and expose the political and personal weaknesses beneath Gilead’s rigid system.

Readers sometimes confuse The Testaments with Atwood’s other novels, including The Blind Assassin, Oryx and Crake, and The Heart Goes Last. Those books are separate works, although several also examine power, social control, or speculative futures.

The novel became a major literary event and jointly won the 2019 Booker Prize with Bernardine Evaristo’s Girl, Woman, Other. Its title refers to the testimonies and records through which Gilead’s history is eventually reconstructed.
