The 2009 documentary that follows Vogue editor Anna Wintour during production of the magazine’s September issue is The September Issue.
Directed by R. J. Cutler, the film records the creation of American Vogue’s September 2007 issue, a publication that reached 840 pages and became one of the magazine’s largest ever. The documentary focuses on editorial meetings, fashion shoots, advertising decisions, and the working relationship between Wintour and creative director Grace Coddington.
The September issue traditionally carries special importance in fashion publishing because it previews major autumn collections and often contains an unusually large amount of advertising and editorial material. The film made that normally private production process visible to a broad audience.
The documentary is sometimes confused with September issues themselves, or with The September Issue: The Movie as an informal description. Its official title is The September Issue, and it premiered at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.
