The 2006 independent film about Magdalena’s celebration in Los Angeles is titled Quinceañera.
Directed by Wash Westmoreland and Richard Glatzer, the film uses the title of the cultural tradition as the name of its story. It follows Magdalena and her family as her fifteenth-birthday plans intersect with major personal and social pressures.
The title can cause confusion because quinceañera is also the name of a real-life coming-of-age tradition. A film title does not mean that the movie documents all versions of the celebration; this work is a fictional narrative set in Echo Park.
The film became notable on the independent-film circuit after receiving two major awards at Sundance in 2006.
