Salvador Dalí’s 1937 painting based on the myth of Narcissus is titled Metamorphosis of Narcissus.

The painting presents Narcissus in a doubled visual structure. On one side, a kneeling figure bends toward the water; on the other, a corresponding hand holds an egg from which a narcissus flower grows. The transformation links the human figure, the stone-like form, and the flower in a deliberately ambiguous Surrealist image.

Dalí painted the work in 1937 after visiting the Italian landscape around Capo di Noli. He also wrote a poem under the same title to accompany it. The myth comes from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, in which Narcissus falls in love with his own reflection and is transformed into the flower named after him.
