What is the title of Rembrandt’s only known seascape?

The story behind the answer

The Storm on the Sea of Galilee is the only known seascape painted by Rembrandt.

Completed in 1633, the painting illustrates the Gospel story in which Jesus calms a storm while traveling with his disciples on the Sea of Galilee. Rembrandt turns the biblical episode into a turbulent maritime scene, with the boat pitching sharply and its passengers struggling against the waves.

The composition is especially notable for its crowded boat and strong contrasts of light and darkness. Rembrandt also included himself among the figures, making the work an unusual combination of biblical history painting, seascape, and self-representation.

The painting was stolen from Boston’s Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in 1990 and has never been recovered. Its absence is one reason the work is frequently discussed both in art history and in accounts of major unsolved museum thefts.
