What is the title of J.R.R. Tolkien’s posthumously published book assembled from his notes by Christopher Tolkien?

The story behind the answer

The title of J.R.R. Tolkien’s posthumously published book assembled from his notes by Christopher Tolkien is The Silmarillion.

The Silmarillion was published in 1977, four years after Tolkien’s death. Christopher Tolkien edited and organized a large body of writings that had evolved over decades, presenting a mythological history of Tolkien’s invented world from its creation through the major events of the First Age.

The book includes the creation account “Ainulindalë,” the history of the Valar in “Valaquenta,” the central First Age narratives in “Quenta Silmarillion,” and later material concerning Númenor and the Rings of Power. It is not a conventional novel with one continuous narrative. Its title refers to the three Silmarils, jewels made by Fëanor that become the focus of the great wars of the First Age. Later publications, such as Unfinished Tales, contain related but different material.
