What is the title of Frida Kahlo’s 1939 painting featuring a large wounded table?
Answer
The Wounded Table
Answer
The Wounded Table
Frida Kahlo’s 1939 painting featuring a large wounded table is The Wounded Table.
The Wounded Table shows Kahlo seated at a table that appears to bleed, with figures and animals beside her. The table is anthropomorphic: its legs resemble injured limbs, and blood runs across the scene. Kahlo painted the work in 1939, shortly after her divorce from Diego Rivera.
The composition draws on Mexican visual traditions, personal symbolism, and the theatrical display of suffering that appears throughout Kahlo’s art. Its scale is unusually large compared with many of her small paintings on metal.
The work disappeared in 1955 while being transported to an exhibition in Moscow and has never been recovered. That disappearance makes The Wounded Table one of Kahlo’s most famous lost paintings.
