What is the title of Edgar Allan Poe's only completed novel?

The story behind the answer

Edgar Allan Poe’s only completed novel was The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket. Published in book form in July 1838, it follows a young Nantucket sailor through shipwrecks, mutiny, violence, and strange adventures in the southern seas.

Poe first published portions of the story in serialized form, but those installments were not completed in the magazine. He later finished the manuscript and issued the full novel as a single volume. The book was initially presented as if it were Pym’s true account, a publishing device that blurred the line between travel narrative and fiction.

The novel begins as a relatively realistic sea adventure, drawing on popular voyage literature and contemporary interest in exploration. As Pym travels farther south, however, the story becomes increasingly surreal and mysterious, ending abruptly near the South Pole.

Readers sometimes mistake The Raven or The Fall of the House of Usher for a novel, but both are shorter works: the first is a narrative poem and the second is a novella. Poe wrote many celebrated stories and poems, yet never completed another novel.
