Answer
The Brothers Karamazov
The Brothers Karamazov was Fyodor Dostoevsky’s final completed novel.
The novel was published in serial form from 1879 to 1880, and its book edition appeared in 1880. It centers on the Karamazov family: the sensual and irresponsible father Fyodor Pavlovich and his sons Dmitri, Ivan, Alyosha, and the servant Smerdyakov. A murder investigation provides the plot’s central crisis.
The story develops questions about God, free will, responsibility, suffering, family conflict, and moral choice. Ivan’s philosophical arguments, Alyosha’s spiritual outlook, and Dmitri’s emotional volatility create sharply contrasting responses to the same world. The famous chapter “The Grand Inquisitor” appears within Ivan’s conversation with Alyosha.
Dostoevsky intended the work to be the first part of a larger project about Alyosha, but he died in 1881 before writing the planned continuation. The existing novel therefore remains his final completed major work, rather than the first installment of a finished series.
