Brown Sugar
Answer
Brown Sugar
D'Angelo's 1995 debut studio album is Brown Sugar. Released by EMI on July 3, 1995, the album combined contemporary R&B with traditional soul, funk, quiet storm, and hip-hop influences.
D'Angelo recorded Brown Sugar during 1994 and 1995, working in studios in New York City and Sacramento. He handled much of the production, songwriting, arranging, and instrumentation himself, drawing on instruments such as keyboards, bass, guitar, drums, and organ. Raphael Saadiq, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, and Bob Power were among the other important contributors.
The album produced four singles, including "Lady," "Brown Sugar," and D'Angelo's cover of "Cruisin'." It spent 65 weeks on the Billboard 200, reached number 22 there, and earned platinum certification within a year of release.
Brown Sugar is often described as a foundational neo-soul record. The term neo soul was soon used by D'Angelo's manager Kedar Massenburg to market a broader movement that also included artists such as Erykah Badu, Maxwell, Lauryn Hill, and Eric Benét. Voodoo was D'Angelo's second studio album, released in 2000.
