What is the title of Claude Monet’s series of haystack paintings?

The story behind the answer

Claude Monet’s series of haystack paintings is called Haystacks. The French title is commonly given as Meules, meaning “Haystacks” or “Stacks,” and the group was painted mainly in 1890 and 1891.

Monet painted stacks near his home in Giverny under different weather and lighting conditions. The repeated subject allowed him to study how sunrise, winter frost, haze, and sunset transformed the same forms. The subject itself was ordinary, but Monet made perception and atmosphere the central drama.

Haystacks belongs to Monet’s mature series practice, alongside paintings of poplars, Rouen Cathedral, and water lilies. The series is sometimes called Grainstacks in older English references, but Haystacks is the standard English title used for the group. Individual paintings can have more specific titles based on the time of day or weather.
