What is the title of Caspar David Friedrich's painting of a ship trapped in ice?

The story behind the answer

What is the title of Caspar David Friedrich’s painting of a ship trapped in ice? The answer is The Sea of Ice.

Friedrich painted The Sea of Ice, also known as Das Eismeer, in 1823–1824. The oil painting presents a shattered Arctic landscape of towering ice slabs, with a tiny shipwreck almost hidden beside them. Its overwhelming scale turns the scene into a meditation on nature’s power and human vulnerability.

The work was commissioned as Friedrich’s image of the terrifying northern world. He had never visited the Arctic, but he studied ice floes on the Elbe near Dresden and may have been influenced by reports of William Edward Parry’s expedition in search of the Northwest Passage.

The title can cause confusion because the painting was once called The Polar Sea, and it has sometimes been associated with the lost painting The Wreck of Hope. Those are related historical titles or identifications, but the standard English title accepted for this work is The Sea of Ice. It is now in the Hamburger Kunsthalle.
