The image first appeared as a stencil mural on a wall beside a staircase in London. It shows a young girl extending one hand toward a red, heart-shaped balloon drifting away. The work is commonly interpreted as suggesting lost love, hope, innocence, or freedom, although Banksy has not supplied one definitive meaning.

The image became one of Banksy’s most recognisable designs and has appeared in many versions, including prints, canvases, and public murals. A version on London’s South Bank was removed in 2014 after the wall was sold.

In 2018, a framed canvas based on the image partially shredded immediately after being sold at Sotheby’s. Banksy later gave that transformed work the title Love Is in the Bin, so that title should not be confused with the original Girl with Balloon.
