What is the tallest building in North America?

The story behind the answer

The tallest building in North America is One World Trade Center in New York City.

Completed in 2014 on the site of the former World Trade Center, the skyscraper rises to an architectural height of 1,776 feet (541 meters). Its height deliberately matches the year 1776, when the United States Declaration of Independence was adopted. The tower stands at the northwest corner of the World Trade Center site in Lower Manhattan.

One World Trade Center is often confused with Central Park Tower, which is the world’s tallest residential building, or Willis Tower, which was once the world’s tallest building. Height rankings can also vary depending on whether a measurement includes architectural spires, roof height, or antenna masts. By standard architectural height, however, One World Trade Center remains North America’s tallest completed building.

The tower is also known as the Freedom Tower, although its official name is One World Trade Center. Its observatory occupies floors 100 through 102, offering views across New York Harbor and the surrounding metropolitan area.
