The hobbit protagonist of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings is Frodo Baggins, so his surname is Baggins. Frodo inherits the One Ring from his uncle Bilbo, who was the central character of The Hobbit.
Frodo is a member of the Baggins family of Hobbiton in the Shire. Unlike Bilbo, he does not seek adventure, but he accepts the responsibility of carrying the Ring away from the Shire and eventually toward Mount Doom. His journey forms the narrative center of The Lord of the Rings.
Baggins is sometimes confused with the surnames of Frodo’s companions. Samwise Gamgee is Frodo’s gardener and closest companion; Peregrin Took and Meriadoc Brandybuck are other members of the Fellowship’s hobbit group. Tolkien uses these family names to suggest different social backgrounds within Hobbit society.
