What is the surname of House’s best friend, James, in House M.D.?

The story behind the answer

Wilson is the surname of James, House’s best friend in House M.D.

Dr. James Wilson is an oncologist at Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital and one of the few people willing to challenge House personally as well as professionally. Their friendship is central to the series, despite House’s manipulation and Wilson’s occasional frustration.

Robert Sean Leonard played Wilson throughout the show. The character’s oncology specialty gives him a different perspective from House’s diagnostic work, and many episodes use their conversations to connect medical cases with questions about trust, responsibility, and mortality.

Wilson should not be confused with Stacy Warner, House’s former partner, or Lisa Cuddy, the hospital administrator. “Wilson” is also a common surname in fiction, but in this series it identifies James Wilson, not a member of House’s diagnostic team.
