What is the standard private IPv4 address range beginning with 192.168?

The story behind the answer

The standard private IPv4 range beginning with 192.168 is 192.168.0.0/16.

This address block contains every address from 192.168.0.0 through 192.168.255.255. It is reserved for private networks, such as home, school, and office LANs, and is not routed directly across the public Internet.

Many consumer routers assign addresses such as 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 to themselves. Devices on the same local network may receive nearby addresses, while Network Address Translation lets them share one public IPv4 address when accessing the Internet.

The other two major private IPv4 blocks are 10.0.0.0/8 and 172.16.0.0/12. The 127.0.0.0/8 block is different: it is reserved for loopback traffic, not ordinary private-network addressing.

The “/16” notation means that the first 16 bits identify the network, leaving 16 bits for addresses within it.
