The Spanish term for a quinceañera’s male court member or escort is chambelán.
A chambelán may participate in the honoree’s formal entrance, waltz, photographs, and other presentation rituals. A quinceañera’s court can include several young people, and the exact titles and number of participants differ among families and countries.
The feminine court title is commonly dama. Together, damas and chambelanes may form the court of honor, sometimes called the court of honor in English-language descriptions. Their role is ceremonial and social rather than an official civic office.
Chambelán can have other meanings in Spanish-speaking historical contexts, including a court attendant or chamberlain. In quinceañera usage, however, it identifies a male participant associated with the honoree’s formal court. It should not be confused with quinceañero, which refers to a male celebrating a fifteenth birthday.
