The Spanish term for a quinceañera’s male ceremonial attendant is chambelán.
A chambelán is commonly part of the court, the group that accompanies the honoree during the formal entrance, photographs, rehearsals, and choreographed dances. In some communities, the lead attendant may be called the escort of honor, while regional vocabulary can differ.
The word is related to chambellan, a term historically connected with a chamberlain or court attendant. In a quinceañera, however, chambelán usually describes a ceremonial role rather than a household or government office.
A court may include both chambelanes and damas, or it may consist of friends of any gender. The size and titles are flexible, so not every celebration uses the same arrangement. Chambelán should not be confused with quinceañero, which identifies a male celebrating his own fifteenth birthday.
