Vals is the Spanish name for the waltz traditionally performed at a quinceañera.
The word vals comes from the same European dance tradition as the English word waltz. In a quinceañera, the vals is commonly a rehearsed presentation involving the celebrant and members of her court. It may be performed to a traditional instrumental arrangement or to a modern song selected by the family.
The dance often appears among the formal moments of the event, alongside the entrance, ceremonial presentations, and family speeches. Customs differ across countries and families, so not every quinceañera includes an identical choreography or musical selection.
Vals is sometimes confused with a generic Spanish word for dance. Baile and danza can both relate to dancing, but neither specifically names the waltz. Pasodoble is a different partnered dance with a distinct musical and choreographic tradition.
