What is the Spanish name for New Year's Eve?

The story behind the answer

The Spanish name for New Year's Eve is Nochevieja.

Nochevieja literally means “old night,” and it refers to December 31, the final night of the year. In Spanish-speaking communities, the evening may include a family meal, a party, fireworks, and the twelve-grapes tradition at midnight.

The term is distinct from Año Nuevo, which means “New Year” and generally refers to January 1 or the new year itself. It is also distinct from Nochebuena, the Spanish name for Christmas Eve, celebrated on December 24. These similar-looking expressions can cause confusion for learners of Spanish.

One of Spain’s most famous Nochevieja gatherings takes place at Madrid’s Puerta del Sol. The clock there provides the twelve midnight chimes that guide the traditional grapes, and the ceremony is carried live on Spanish television each year.
