What is the southernmost continent?

The story behind the answer

The southernmost continent is Antarctica.

Antarctica surrounds the geographic South Pole and lies almost entirely south of the Antarctic Circle. It is encircled by the Southern Ocean and covers about 14.2 million square kilometres, making it the fifth-largest continent.

Although Antarctica is commonly pictured as a solid white landmass, its ice sheet covers most of the underlying rock. The ice averages roughly 1.9 kilometres thick, and the continent contains about 90% of the world's glacial ice. Antarctica is also Earth's coldest, driest, and windiest continent.

A common mix-up is confusing the continent with the Antarctic region or the South Pole itself. The South Pole is a location within Antarctica, while the Antarctic region includes surrounding ocean and islands. Antarctica has no permanent native population; researchers and support staff occupy its stations seasonally or year-round.
