The signature hamburger sold by the American chain Whataburger is called the Whataburger.
Whataburger was founded by Harmon Dobson and Paul Burton in Corpus Christi, Texas, in 1950. Dobson wanted to create a burger large enough that customers would need to hold it with both hands, an idea reflected in the company name and its oversized original sandwich.
The standard Whataburger is built around a beef patty served on a five-inch toasted bun. Traditional toppings include mustard, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, and diced onions, although customers can customize the order.
The name is both the company’s brand and the title of its flagship hamburger, which can cause confusion when discussing the chain. It is not the same item as Whataburger’s later specialty burgers, such as the Whataburger with Cheese or the popular breakfast sandwiches.
