What is the second planet in distance from the sun?
Answer
Venus
Answer
Venus
The second planet in distance from the Sun is Venus. It orbits between Mercury and Earth at an average distance of about 0.72 astronomical units, completing one trip around the Sun in roughly 224.7 Earth days.
Venus is similar to Earth in size, mass, and rocky composition, which has earned it the nickname “Earth’s sister planet.” Its surface conditions, however, are dramatically different. A dense atmosphere made mostly of carbon dioxide and a global layer of sulfuric-acid clouds produce an extreme greenhouse effect. Surface temperatures average about 464 °C, hot enough to melt lead, and pressure is approximately 92 times that at Earth’s sea level.
People sometimes confuse Venus with the brightest object in the night sky, the Moon, or assume that its brightness means it is the closest planet to Earth. Venus is usually the brightest planet visible from Earth and appears as the “morning star” or “evening star,” but its changing position depends on its orbit inside Earth’s orbit. Another unusual fact is that Venus rotates retrograde, and one rotation takes 243 Earth days—longer than its year.
