What is the scientific name of the Indian ornamental tarantula?

The story behind the answer

The scientific name of the Indian ornamental tarantula is Poecilotheria regalis.

Poecilotheria regalis is an arboreal tarantula found in parts of India. It is also called the Indian ornamental tree spider or Indian ornamental. The species was described by Reginald Innes Pocock in 1899, and its name reflects its appearance: Poecilotheria derives from Greek words associated with “spotted” and “wild beast,” while regalis means “royal.”

This species lives in holes and crevices in tall trees, where it may build an asymmetric funnel web. Its intricate abdominal pattern makes it popular with tarantula keepers, but it is fast and defensive when cornered. Its venom is considered medically significant compared with that of many tarantulas, with reported bites producing intense pain. A common mix-up is Poecilotheria metallica, another striking Indian ornamental tarantula, but it is a different species.
