What is the scientific name of the giant sequoia tree?

The story behind the answer

The scientific name of the giant sequoia tree is Sequoiadendron giganteum. This conifer is native to groves on the western slopes of California’s Sierra Nevada, generally between about 1,400 and 2,400 metres in elevation.

Giant sequoias are not usually the tallest trees, but they are among the largest living organisms by volume. Their massive trunks, fire-adapted bark, and long lifespans allow them to persist for centuries. Periodic low-intensity fire can clear competing vegetation and expose mineral soil where their seeds may establish.

The name is often mixed up with Sequoia sempervirens, the coast redwood. The two are close relatives, but the giant sequoia has a broader trunk and a more inland mountain distribution. The genus name Sequoiadendron means roughly “sequoia tree,” while giganteum refers to its immense size.
