What is the scientific name of the desert rose plant?

The story behind the answer

The scientific name of the desert rose plant is Adenium obesum.

Adenium obesum is a flowering species in the dogbane family, Apocynaceae. It is native to dry regions south of the Sahara, eastern and southern Africa, and parts of the Arabian Peninsula. The plant’s swollen basal stem, called a caudex, stores water and gives it a distinctive bonsai-like shape.

Despite its name, the desert rose is not a rose. Its tubular, five-petaled flowers are more closely related to those of oleander and plumeria. Flowers are commonly pink, red, or white, often with a paler throat, and cultivated plants may bloom repeatedly in warm conditions.

The species is poisonous: its sap contains cardiac glycosides. In parts of Africa, preparations from the plant have historically been used as arrow poison and fish toxin. Gardeners also prize it as a drought-tolerant houseplant and bonsai subject, but its sap should not be handled casually and pets and children should be kept away from it.
