What is the scientific name of the blue tang?

The story behind the answer

What is the scientific name of the blue tang? For the Indo-Pacific blue tang, the scientific name is Paracanthurus hepatus.

This brightly colored surgeonfish is also called the regal tang, palette surgeonfish, hippo tang, or royal blue tang. It is the only living species in the genus Paracanthurus and is native to the tropical Indo-Pacific, including waters around the Philippines, Indonesia, Japan, Australia, and East Africa.

The common name “blue tang” can cause confusion because it is shared by several surgeonfishes. The Atlantic blue tang is Acanthurus coeruleus, while the Indian Ocean blue tang is Acanthurus leucosternon. In aquarium and popular-culture contexts, however, the blue tang most often means P. hepatus, the species represented by Dory in Finding Nemo and Finding Dory.

Like other surgeonfishes, it has a sharp, scalpel-like spine on each side of the tail base. Adults graze on algae as well as eating zooplankton, making them part of the ecological community that helps limit algal growth on coral reefs. The species is popular in aquariums but is mainly collected from the wild.
