What is the scientific name of the bleeding heart flower?
Answer
Lamprocapnos spectabilis
Answer
Lamprocapnos spectabilis
The scientific name of the bleeding heart flower is Lamprocapnos spectabilis.
Lamprocapnos spectabilis is a perennial flowering plant in the poppy family, Papaveraceae. Its arching stems carry distinctive heart-shaped pink or red flowers, each with a small white inner tip that resembles a drop. The plant is native to parts of Siberia, northern China, Korea and Japan, and is widely grown in temperate gardens.
The species was long known as Dicentra spectabilis, so older gardening books and plant labels may use that name. Botanical classification later placed it in the separate genus Lamprocapnos. That taxonomic change explains why both names appear in references, but Lamprocapnos spectabilis is the currently accepted name in the quiz’s intended usage.
Several plants can be called “bleeding heart” in ordinary speech, including some Dicentra species. That can create confusion, but the familiar ornamental plant with pendant heart-shaped blooms is L. spectabilis. It usually flowers in spring, then becomes dormant after its foliage fades in summer, especially in warmer climates.
