What is the scientific name for the tomato?

The scientific name for the tomato is Solanum lycopersicum. The tomato belongs to the nightshade family, Solanaceae, alongside potatoes, tobacco, and peppers.

Although commonly treated as a vegetable in cooking, the tomato’s fruit is botanically a berry. The plant originated in western South America, while domestication may have occurred there or in Central America. Spanish explorers and colonists introduced tomatoes to Eurasia during the Columbian Exchange in the 16th century.

The species name has an unusual history. In 1753, Carl Linnaeus classified the tomato in the genus Solanum, using the name Solanum lycopersicum. Philip Miller moved it into a separate genus in 1768 and called it Lycopersicon esculentum, a name that remained widely used for generations. Modern taxonomy generally recognizes Linnaeus’s original placement.

The wrong options are also useful clues: Cucumis sativus is cucumber, Capsicum annuum includes many peppers, and Solanum tuberosum is potato. Tomatoes and potatoes are close relatives, but they are different species.
