What is the Romanian Easter custom of tapping dyed eggs against one another called?

The story behind the answer

The Romanian Easter custom of tapping dyed eggs against one another is called ciocnitul ouălor.

The Romanian phrase means “egg tapping” or “egg knocking.” During the Easter meal, two people strike the pointed ends of hard-boiled eggs together while exchanging an Easter greeting. The person whose shell remains unbroken continues against another egg.

Romanian Easter eggs are often dyed red, although other colors and elaborate decorated eggs also occur. Red eggs have a strong association with Orthodox Easter and are commonly linked to the blood of Christ in Christian symbolism.

Ciocnitul ouălor is a social game and blessing custom, not the same practice as an Easter egg hunt or the British and American egg-rolling tradition. Similar egg-tapping customs exist elsewhere in southeastern Europe, but the Romanian name identifies the local form.
